Introduction
In my report I’ll be explaining
the research that I have found and will be using for my TV show to make it
successful hit on TV and for the audience to enjoy. The name of my TV show is
going to be called ‘’Non-Existence’’. The type of genre this TV show is going
to be is either sci-fi horror or sci-fi thriller. This show is aimed at mainly
males aged 18-24, but will appeal to anyone who has an interest in Sci-fi. This programme is aimed at people who enjoy
sci-fi films or TV shows, e.g. people
who are big fans of Star Trek or Battlestar Galactic will hopefully be the main
audience.
The ‘story’ is set in the future and uses futuristic clips
and objects. The target audience will be 16/18-24 years. The reason for this is because it will
contain violence, strong language and maybe some sexual content. This show will
need to be shown after the
‘watershed’ to prevent younger
viewers accessing material that may contain some very upsetting scenes and some
very scary scenes.
The target audience will identify
with the sort of show with violence, mystery solving and scary sci-fi special
effects. This TV show is similar to the film ‘Terminator’ as in the film it has
robots at war with humans. This TV show
has a similar story line.
The ideal person who I would want
to direct this TV show for is Ridley Scott. The reason for this is because
Ridley Scott is an excellent director with a lot of experience of directing
Sci-fi shows and films. He has a good reputation and his associated with
‘gritty’ realism/tension-building as well as effective use of special
effects. His most famous Sci-fi and
successful film was Alien and I am hoping he will do the same for my TV show to
make it successful. He is also a well-known director and people enjoy the work
he does. However, I must be realistic and directors of Ridley Scott’s statue
are always busy. Nevertheless, it would
be imperative to select a director with experience of directing the Sci-fi
genre and would be sympathetic to my ideas and vision.
The actors that I want to star in
this TV show are Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway. The reason for this is that both
of them have starred in great Sci-fi films called ‘’The Martian’’ and ‘’Interstellar’’
and come with a ‘box-office draw’.
However, it would also be important to include younger actors in the
production, bearing in mind that I want to attract a younger audience.
Related TV shows
Star Trek- The rating on IMDB was
8.7/10 ‘’The Next
Generation was truly an awesome series which did well considering it had a
tough act to follow in Star Trek the Original Series’’. This quote here was
from a fan who really enjoyed watching Star Trek the next generation.
Doctor Who-The rating on IMDB was
8.8/10. Doctor Who
Series 9 before the Flood Episode 4 BBC I, W 194,485. This number shows average
programme streams. According to BARB 7.7 million UK viewers watch Doctor Who
the Christmas special. Doctor Who made a profit of £308 million.
Battlestar Galactia- The rating on
IMDB was 8.8/10. This is not boring it is STUPID! This is a quote from
a person who thought Battlestar Galactia was not very successful. Battlestar
Galactia had 2.8 million viewers watching the show but the viewers dropped to
1.8 million.
The X-files- The rating on IMDB was
8.7/10. This show is
a thinking person's show. Sometimes it does get slow, but it always remains
interesting. This quote came from a person who thought the x-files was
interesting but boring and slow for the fan.
Story
The story is all about a war
between man and machine, and where a man is in the army as an officer, has been
taken hostage, has been experimented, and has changed into a new person. The
problem is that he is not human anymore as he has no human limbs as he has
robotic arms, robotic legs and a robotic body, and also he can’t remember a
thing that has happened to him.
The whole story in this TV show
is the main character to discover who he really is. Can he remember who he was
again, and would he be able to find out what happened to him and who has turned
him into a robot.
Will he be able to get back to
his human life? Will he get to his family? In the TV series the war is still
going on between robots and humans, just to give it more action and to give the
audience a bit of entertainment.
The audience loves a story that will continue week on week
where tension is built on and mini sub-plots are written in to ensure the story
is able to last throughout the series or maybe carries onto the next TV
show.
My story will probably continue
through the 1st series and the 2nd series and maybe even
a 3rd series if both TV series were successful and we have enough
money to make another TV series.
In this story there will be
disturbing scenes that could put the audience off and discourage them not to
watch the show anymore or people may enjoy the tension, excitement and the
entertainment in the story and want to keep on watching it to end of the
series.
Secondary research
My main target would be to beat
Star Trek’s ratings so that the show can be shown on ‘better’ TV channels (more
popular channels) and therefore enhance ratings making it a ‘cult’ must see TV
series to entertain the audience, something they can enjoy watching with their
friends. Below are some of the results from Star Trek’s ratings and the views
of what audience liked and what they disliked about the show.
‘Star Trek the NextGeneration’ has scored an
8.7/10. This shows it was a successful
TV show. If you don’t believe me, here is the link to look at the score it got
and the good audience reviews:
On the other hand, the latest
series of Battlestar Galactic was a show that failed to attract good ratings
and reviews. It received a poor score on IMDB and was unpopular with audiences,
making it an unsuccessful show. Here is
the link to the website showing the poor reviews and the low score on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076984/.
Here’s a quote from a fan who
enjoys the TV show Star Trek the next generation. As you can see the fan has
put the review headline saying ‘’perhaps the best sci-fi TV series of all
time’’. This proves that the TV series was successful and that the fans enjoyed
watching it. The fan has also put a positive quote about Patrick Stewart as
Captain Kirk. Saying how he is the best actor and the best person for the part
as captain Kirk.
In the earlier series of Battlestar Galactica
the TV show in 2009 was classed as a success as the storyline and the graphics
were better and scored an 8.8/10, and got good reviews from the audience.
The review that this fan has put is saying
that Battlestar Galactica is more for grownups as the fan was saying it has
violence and has some disturbing scenes for younger views that might not enjoy
watching, but the fan also said that they enjoyed the show and thought it’s
good for older people to watch and thought it’s a good TV show to watch.
I got all this information from IMDB which
shows all the ratings of the TV shows that have done well or that have done
bad, it also shows the people who watched the show by leaving a comment on what
they think about the show. Here is an image from barb showing the figure
ratings of Doctor who been shown at Christmas.
As you can see in this image, Doctor who has
had 7,680,000 views from people who watched it on BBC 1 at Christmas. You can
also see it has the 6th highest views been shown on BBC 1.
Product
placement
Product placement, brand integration
or embedded marketing, is according to Business Dictionary,
"an advertising technique used by companies to subtly promote their
products through a non-traditional advertising technique, usually through
appearances in film, television, or other media. “
Product placement stands out as a
marketing strategy because it is the most direct attempt to derive commercial
benefit from "the context and environment within which the product is
displayed or used". The technique can be beneficial for viewers, since
interruptive advertising removes them from the entertainment. For example, the
film iRobot with Will Smith is driving an Audi car as that car is representing
the car company and that car company is getting paid by the film company for
representing their car in the film.
In my TV show the product placement I
am going to have is a car company which BMW, and in this TV show it will show
BMW cars been driven around in the futuristic world. I will also be paying the
car company to be in my TV show and also be making the car company well known
to the world and helping the car company sell big cars to the world.
Primary research
Research will help inform my plans about the project and I
will be asking some people some questions about the TV show I am creating. The
questions are going to be on ‘Surveymonkey’ and will be forwarded to my
intended target audience. By working in
collaboration with either Game/HMV/Amazon the survey could be forwarded to
people who have bought similar products – e.g. games/DVDs etc. Through their
email details. Another avenue would be to
share these ‘survey questions’ with fellow students, contacting them through
Facebook and asking them to go on the computer and answer the questions that
are on ‘Surveymonkey’.
This is the link:
to ‘Surveymonkey’ for my friends and family to answer
questions to their favourite TV shows and also asking them a question about
whether they would watch ‘Non-Existence’ (after explaining story content and
background).
Results show that most people have said ‘yes’ they are
interested in watching my TV show ‘Non-Existence’. The sample provided are fellow
students from Middlesbrough College.
Though most of them have said ‘Yes’, a few of them have said ‘No’ and
‘Maybe’. Some people have asked me they are looking for a bit of romance as
they said that this TV show has too much violence and has too many disturbing
to watch. Therefore, the audience have requested that I add a bit of romance
and a bit of light entertainment into the TV, show to make the show loving and
less disturbing too watch. Something that the audience will feel comfortable
watching with friends, family and even someone you are in a relationship with.
SurveyMonkey. I’m thankful for
the two people who did respond, but I am disappointed that the other people
didn’t attempt to answer the questions.
Audience research: This TV show is aimed at males, students,
18-24, disposable income, students who are interested in media and drama, like
adventure, sci-fi and action TV shows and likes watching TV shows in their
spare time. University and college students, and who watches TV shows over the
weekend.
Geodemographic
The TV show won’t be set in any
one particular area in this country or another country. Scenes can be shot in a number of places
(including overseas) placing less restrictions on shooting. It is more important to get good visual
backgrounds to be set against the story line, helping to build tension and drama
rather than offending people about the local areas that they live in.
Psychographic
This TV show is aimed at
teenagers and young people from the age of 16/18 to 24. The type of audience that this TV show is
aimed at people who enjoy action, thriller, tense dramas etc. The audience
would love to see in the TV show that will entertain them. The audience are people
who enjoy Sci-fi films, people who love futuristic TV shows and films. People
who enjoy watching battles between robots and humans and this TV show is very
alike the ‘Terminator’ film. People who
watch the ‘Terminator’ films are our target audience for this TV show ‘Non
Existence’. This TV show is also for
all audiences who are people with a diverse background. The reason for this is that
the cast are full of people who come from a different ethnic society and
different beliefs.
Market research
This TV show is linked to or is
similar to TV shows and films. The TV show is a sci-fi drama, like ‘’Star
Trek’’. Star Trek is a sci-fi TV show in
space with set within a futuristic world.
The TV show is filmed in futuristic times where there is advanced technology
and a futuristic setting. The film(s) that is this TV show links to is
‘Terminator’ and ‘Robocop’ as it has got humans and robots at war with each
other. In the film Terminator there is a war between man and machine.
The type of sponsorship I would
want for this TV show is from ‘’GAME’’, ‘’HMV’’ and/or ‘Amazon’. The reason for
this is that these are successful retailers that sell gaming and film/TV products
that would link to the show. Consumers
who buy a large number of their products would also be the target audience of
my show. The other reason is that HMV, Game or Amazon would like to have the
rights to have the TV show on DVD for the customers to buy and also to turn the
story concept within the show into a game enabling ‘’Non-existence’’ to be a
successful franchise extending into other merchandise.
I would prefer for the show to be broadcasted
on FOX channel. The reason being FOX already has a number of successful sci-fi
thrillers, for example the ‘’The Walking Dead’’, and over 16.9 million people
watch TV shows on the Channel FOX, and it would be a good place to start off
your TV show. The show would preferably be on a Monday night, the same night as
the ‘Walking Dead’. This way a well-established
audience is already on the network, an audience who would have similar tastes
in story lines and genres to my show and would be ‘in place’ to enjoy mine.
Particularly if it followed straight after.
The TV show will start straight after the ‘Walking Dead’ to keep the
entertainment going and to get more people watching FOX.
Production research
Budget
Planning this show I would need a list of key items. Items listed come at a cost but are the basic
essentials for any TV drama. Essentials needed that will need to be budgeted
for are:
• Actors
• Camera
Equipment
• Make
up
• Back
stage crew
• Visual
effects
• Extras
• Producer
• CGI
• Script’s
• Props
• Costumes
• Explosions
All of this equipment will cost
me, the producer anything upwards of between £1,000,000 - £2,000,000. This will be the normal price for many TV
shows, especially those that require special effects, ‘technical’ props and
difficult make-up and costume. But if it
is successful then money invested should show a good return and profit.
Conclusion
I believe that the concept of my
TV show is a good one and could do well in the future. It is a popular genre and is one that can be
extended and developed into other areas of merchandise, enhancing its
profitability and success, thereby attracting investors.
I have tried to present my ideas
of how it will work and the success criteria for its launch. I have presented how a target audience may be
receptive to the story line and further work that is needed. I have also tried
to outline details of the target audience and how to access their opinions and
preferences on TV shows and films.
I have also tried to present in
this report who on the TV networks would be the most appropriate to be
broadcast the show and who the possible competitors could be. Explaining who my sponsorship companies are
going to be and linking which TV shows are a similar genre – highlighting those
that were successful and unsuccessful.
What went well in this assignment
was where I helped create a PowerPoint to show to the class on how I was going
to make this TV show successful and how it is going to be made. Successful
teamwork helped make it a success – using opportunities to discuss how to
present our ideas to a target audience successfully.
Poster
This is a possible poster design
for my TV show. However, I have not
added any text and more images could be added to further interest.
Mood board
This is my mood board that is
relating to my TV show, that has robots and futuristic weapons and it is set in
the future my TV show, and it is about war between man and robot.
